Thursdays Things for Baby

Thursday, August 23, 2012

B finally made the transition from her "swaddle me" to her "sleep sack." At 5.5 months old it's about time! The sleep sack by Halo below is one thing we can't live without lately.

While also on the topic of sleep we Blair also can't live without this white noise machine by First Years. It allows me to get things done around the house without worrying about waking her up. I like this particular model because it doesn't look too babyish or cutesie. I have this thing about baby items looking too childish. Weird, I know since she is exactly that...a baby.

Another necessary sleep item for us has been this monitor by Summer Infant. I'm pretty sure if my mother-in-law could take it home with her and watch it every night she would never go to bed. :) She just loves watching her grandbaby sleep! I love that I can peak on her on the video screen whenever I want!

Finally, a bedtime must for B is her Jesus Storybook Bible. A friend of mine received this at her baby shower and was so jazzed about it that I had to get one for B. It has beautiful illustrations and M enjoys reading it to B at night while she nurses before bed.

So there you have it! At 5.5 months these are our bedtime essentials. I'm sure these things will be ever changing as she grows older.

Tonight we are going out to dinner with my family as a farewell to my youngest brother who is heading off to college Friday morning! He will be attending Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. B is really going to miss her Uncle so I guess we will just have to give him a surprise visit at his dorm?! :) My parents will officially be empty nesters but I plan on filling this void by dropping B off often. Ha. Just when they thought they were done with kids.... muahahhaa. We will miss you Uncle Jake but we know where to find you... :)

  1. We just de-swaddled A too. We have a Aden + Anais sleep bag and last night didn't have any problems with her startling awake. I also totally hear you on the "baby" looking items. I know babies love bright colors, but I try to keep it to just learning/developmental toys and not everything in the house.

I'll throw in a post request too, just because I'm curious, what have you been doing for nap routines? I know you had trouble with B only sleeping on you (same here with A). Do you darken the nursery? Use a sleepbag? Do the same routine as bedtime with a book, rocking, songs, etc?

    1. A nap post will be in the making! I did touch on what we've been doing a smidge on Monday's post this week. I know you're not a fan of letting A cry, but it's what I have found to work. It's not easy though! Hearing B crying breaks my heart! But I know it's for her ultimate good of learning to sleep. The more consistent I am the better she does!

    2. I read Monday's post, but never got a chance to comment since I read it on my phone during a feeding and forgot to come back! I definitely know the CIO works for a lot parents, and I don't think anyone is wrong for it. So far I've tried to do some of the suggestions in the No Cry Sleep Solution which is basically the 5, 10, etc minute checks, the problem is she just gets more hysterical when I come in the room. I usually let her cry if its just a fuss cry, but the elevated screaming/sad cries I can't take at least not for prolonged periods. (Im sure I might change this thought in a few more weeks, well see!)

We have a good bedtime routine though, so once she learns how to fall asleep solo we should be good. It's just the naps are awful! No routine and when I see her tired signs and try to settle her down, she just works herself up more getting even more tired!

  2. Wow, you continue to teach about things that would have been great when I had my boys. : ) Haha. I'm so glad you have everything you need... I can't think of one thing to suggest to you that you don't already have. : ) I'm so excited you have the Jesus Storybook Bible. It IS SO beautifully illustrated and written. I'm actually painting 10 big paintings right now for the PreSchool Lobby at Sandals (taken from that Bible). Our cirriculum is straight from that Bible, too. I always suggest it to young parents. But you were already on to it! : )

    1. I swear they come out with new and improved baby gear yearly! I bet they didn't have some of the things that I have now when your boys were young! I would LOVE to see the paintings at Sandals ! I bet they are amazing!!! I also heard the book called growing kids gods way is good. I'll be picking that up soon!

  3. Great recommendations! So you just put B down in the sleep sack at night? That's it...right?

    1. We put in her a long sleeved onesie so her arms stay warm and then zip her up in the sleep sack. No other blankets needed. When the weather cools down I assume we will put more substantial pajamas on underneath.

  4. Is the white noise machine loud enough to block out a screaming toddler?? I've used a website on my laptop before, but then I can't use my laptop during nap time! I also had a different kind of sound machine and the white noise didn't get loud enough.
